How to Get the Thailand LTR Visa as a Remote Worker

The Thailand Long-Term Resident visa is one of the best visa options in Southeast Asia for remote workers. Here is how to qualify and apply.

Thailand’s Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa is one of the most significant immigration policy developments in Southeast Asia for remote workers and expat founders in recent years. Launched in 2022 and refined since, it offers a 10-year renewable residency option with a bundle of practical benefits that address the core frustrations of long-term Thailand residency — the annual border runs, the 90-day reporting requirements, the uncertainty of tourist visa extensions.

For remote workers earning USD income who want to base themselves in Thailand for multi-year periods, the LTR visa is the most viable legal path to long-term stability that Thailand has ever offered to this demographic.

What the LTR Visa Actually Provides

The LTR visa is a 10-year visa (issued as 5 years, renewable for another 5) with the following practical benefits:

  • No 90-day reporting requirement — standard long-term visa holders must report to immigration every 90 days. LTR holders are exempt.
  • Multiple re-entry permit included — no need to purchase a separate re-entry permit before leaving Thailand.
  • Work permit for remote work — LTR holders can legally work for foreign employers or their own foreign-registered businesses from Thailand without a standard Thai work permit. This is significant — most visa categories do not allow any form of work.
  • Fast-track airport immigration — LTR holders access dedicated immigration lanes at major airports.
  • Preferential income tax rate — for the Highly Skilled Professional category (less relevant for most remote workers but worth noting).

The 10-year timeframe provides genuine stability for founders who want to commit to Thailand as a long-term base without the annual renewal anxiety that every other visa option involves.

The Remote Worker Category Requirements

The LTR visa has four categories. The relevant one for most remote workers and expat founders is the Work-From-Thailand Professional category.

Requirements for the Work-From-Thailand Professional category:

Income requirement: Minimum personal income of $80,000 USD per year averaged over the past 2 years, or $40,000 USD per year if you hold a master’s degree or above, or own intellectual property, or have received Series A funding or above.

Employment requirement: Must be employed by or own a company that has been in operation for at least 3 years and has annual revenues of at least $150 million USD. This requirement is the most restrictive for independent founders and freelancers — it is designed for employees of established companies, not solo operators.

Health insurance: Must have health insurance coverage with a minimum of $50,000 USD coverage per year, valid in Thailand.

For independent founders: The Work-From-Thailand Professional category’s employment requirement is challenging for solo founders working with small business clients. The Wealthy Global Citizen category ($1 million USD in assets or income of $80,000+ per year with investment in Thailand) is more accessible for high-earning founders but requires the asset or investment component.

The Application Process

Step 1: Prepare documentation

The core documents required for the Work-From-Thailand Professional category:

  • Passport valid for at least 18 months
  • Employment contract or business registration documents
  • Income verification — tax returns, payslips, or bank statements for the past 2 years
  • Health insurance certificate showing Thailand coverage and minimum $50,000 benefit
  • Educational certificates if claiming the reduced income threshold
  • Recent passport-sized photographs

Step 2: Apply through the BOI Thailand portal

The LTR visa application is processed by Thailand’s Board of Investment (BOI), not the standard immigration authority. Applications are submitted through the online portal at ltr.boi.go.th.

The online application requires uploading all supporting documents and completing the application form. Processing time is typically 20 to 30 business days for complete applications.

Step 3: Receive approval and collect visa

Once approved, you receive an approval letter and collect the physical visa either at a Thai embassy or consulate abroad, or at the BOI One Stop Service Center in Bangkok if you are already in Thailand on a valid visa.

Step 4: Register at your local immigration office

After entering Thailand on the LTR visa, register at your local immigration office within 90 days of arrival. This is a one-time requirement rather than the recurring 90-day reporting that standard visa holders face.

The Practical Reality for Independent Founders

The Work-From-Thailand Professional category’s requirement for employment at a company with $150M+ annual revenue effectively excludes most independent founders and small business owners.

The most common workarounds:

Establish a Thai company: Some founders establish a Thai BOI-promoted company to sponsor their own LTR application. This involves real setup costs and ongoing compliance requirements.

Use a PEO (Professional Employer Organization): A PEO can technically employ you on paper while you continue working independently, potentially meeting the employment requirement. The legality and practical implications of this approach require advice from a Thai immigration attorney.

Wealthy Global Citizen category: Founders with significant assets — $1 million USD in investments or savings — or who can invest $500,000 in Thai government bonds, Thai property, or Thai companies may qualify for the Wealthy Global Citizen category, which does not have the employment restriction.

Continue with alternative visa strategies: For founders who do not meet the LTR requirements, the Thailand Elite visa ($15,000 USD one-time fee for 5 to 20 years of multiple-entry access) provides long-term Thailand residency without the income or employment requirements. It does not include a work permit but provides the physical access to Thailand that most founders need.

Is the LTR Worth Pursuing?

For remote workers employed by established international companies with $150M+ revenue, the LTR Work-From-Thailand Professional visa is straightforwardly the best long-term Thailand option available. The 10-year stability, the work permit inclusion, and the elimination of 90-day reporting make it significantly better than any alternative.

For independent founders and small business owners, the employment requirement creates a real barrier. The Thailand Elite visa is the practical alternative — significantly cheaper than the investment required for the Wealthy Global Citizen LTR category, and sufficient for most founders who need physical presence in Thailand without the formal work permit.

The LTR program continues to evolve. Checking the BOI Thailand website for current requirements before applying is essential, as the income thresholds and category definitions have been adjusted since the program launched.
