What Actually Happens When the Power Goes Out During a Philippines Typhoon (And How to Keep Working)

A practical guide to typhoon season in the Philippines for remote workers and founders: backup power, backup internet, and the prep that keeps you online.

Every remote worker who bases in the Philippines eventually has the same experience: the sky turns green-gray, PAGASA raises a signal number on the news, and at some point in the next 24 hours, the power goes out. Not “flickers.” Out. Sometimes for hours. Sometimes for days. If your income depends on being reachable, that is not weather. That is a business continuity event, and most people find that out the hard way, mid-storm, with a client waiting on a reply.

Typhoon Season Is Not a One-Time Risk, It’s a Calendar Event

Typhoon season in the Philippines runs roughly June through November, with the heaviest activity from June to September. That’s not a rare edge case to plan around once. If you’re based here long-term, it’s roughly half the year, every year. Planning your infrastructure as if it’s a normal grid with occasional bad luck is the mistake. Planning it as “the grid will go down for real, more than once, on a predictable seasonal schedule” is what actually holds up.

PAGASA (the Philippine weather bureau) uses a Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal system to communicate severity, numbered 1 through 5:

  • Signal 1 — 30-60 kph winds expected within 36 hours. Business as usual, but start watching.
  • Signal 2 — 62-88 kph winds expected within 24 hours. This is when you start actually preparing, not when you plan to start.
  • Signal 3 and above — this is when outages become likely, not just possible, and when schools and some offices in affected areas shut down entirely.

The lead time matters more than the intensity. A Signal 2 alert gives you roughly a day. That is enough time to charge everything, secure a plan, and tell clients what’s coming — if you actually use it instead of waiting to see what happens.

The Backup Power Stack That Actually Works

You do not need a whole-house generator to keep a laptop, a router, and a phone charged through a multi-day outage. You need a layered stack:

Layer 1 — A power bank sized for real use, not a phone top-up. A 20,000-27,000 mAh power bank can get a laptop through a workday of light use, and multiple phone charges beyond that. This is your first line of defense and it needs zero setup.

Layer 2 — A portable power station (500Wh-1000Wh class). This is the piece that actually changes the outcome. It runs a laptop, a router, and lighting for a full day or more, recharges from a wall outlet when power is up, and some models recharge from a small solar panel when it isn’t. This is the single highest-leverage purchase for anyone whose income depends on staying online here.

Layer 3 — Solar, if you’re settled somewhere long-term. A small panel (100-200W) paired with a power station means you’re not dependent on the grid coming back at all for basic connectivity and device charging. Overkill for a short stay, close to mandatory if you’ve committed to a base for years.

Skip the diesel generator unless you’re running a household staff and full appliances. It’s noise, fuel logistics, and maintenance for a problem a power station solves more simply for a solo operator.

The Backup Internet Stack

Power is only half the problem. Fiber and cable internet in the Philippines typically go down with the grid, or shortly after, because the local infrastructure serving your neighborhood loses power too, independent of whether your own building does.

Starlink changed the calculus here. It’s legally available in the Philippines, works through the same outages that take down fiber (it needs power for the dish and router, which is exactly what Layer 2 above solves), and gives you a connection that isn’t tied to the same local infrastructure your ISP depends on. If you’re serious about uptime and based somewhere with sky visibility, this is the real fix, not a backup.

A second SIM on a different carrier is the cheap, no-setup-required layer under that. Globe and Smart run on different infrastructure and don’t always go down together in the same storm. A phone with a second-carrier SIM and hotspot enabled is a working fallback for email and messages even when it can’t carry a full workday of video calls.

Know your local coworking spaces before you need them. Many keep generators specifically because the operators know their clients need uptime. If your own setup fails, a coworking space with power and internet is often the actual reason you don’t lose the day.

The Pre-Storm Checklist

When a Signal 2 alert goes up, this is the sequence, not a vague “prepare for the storm”:

  1. Charge every device and every power bank/power station to 100%.
  2. Fill water containers — outages often take municipal water pumps with them.
  3. Message clients proactively: “Typhoon signal is up in my area, I may have intermittent connectivity over the next 24-48 hours, here’s how to reach me if my primary channel drops.” Send this before the storm, not as an apology after.
  4. Download or cache anything you’ll need offline — client files, reference docs, anything behind a login you might not be able to reach.
  5. Charge a flashlight or headlamp. Sounds obvious. Is the thing people forget every single time.

What to Tell Clients Before It Happens, Not During

The single biggest difference between a stressful outage and a non-event is whether your clients already know this is a normal part of where you’re based. Operators who mention typhoon season once, upfront, as part of how they work (“I’m based in Southeast Asia, typhoon season runs June-November, I keep backup power and connectivity for exactly this, but expect me to flag it if a specific storm might affect response time”) never have to explain it mid-crisis. Operators who never mention it are explaining themselves for the first time exactly when they’re least equipped to.

The Actual Lesson

None of this is really about typhoons. It’s about the same principle that runs through every part of building a resilient remote business from abroad: redundancy is not paranoia, it’s the job. A power bank, a power station, a second connectivity path, and a client communication habit set up before the storm turns a multi-day outage into a mild inconvenience instead of a missed deadline and an uncomfortable client conversation.

Base here long enough and you will lose power during a storm. The only real question is whether you already built the stack that makes it a non-event, or whether you’re figuring it out for the first time while the lights are already off.
