Dental Tourism in the Philippines and Thailand: Real Costs and What to Expect

Dental tourism in Southeast Asia can save founders thousands per year. Here are the real costs, the best clinics, and what the experience is actually like.

Dental care is one of the most significant health arbitrage opportunities available to expat founders, and one of the most underused. The cost differential between dental procedures in the US and Southeast Asia is large enough that a single crown or implant in the Philippines or Thailand pays for multiple months of travel costs to get there. For expat founders already living in the region, the math is even more straightforward β€” quality dental care at 10 to 20 percent of US prices is part of the routine cost structure, not a special trip.

This guide covers the real costs for common procedures, the clinics worth using in both countries, and what the actual experience looks like for a first-time dental patient in Southeast Asia.

The Cost Comparison

These are real market prices as of 2026 for common dental procedures across the three markets:

ProcedureUS AveragePhilippinesThailand
Dental cleaning and exam$200 to $350$15 to $40$25 to $60
X-rays (full set)$150 to $300$10 to $25$15 to $35
Tooth filling (composite)$150 to $300$20 to $60$30 to $80
Root canal (single canal)$700 to $1,500$80 to $200$100 to $300
Porcelain crown$1,000 to $2,500$150 to $400$200 to $500
Dental implant (full, including crown)$3,000 to $5,000$800 to $1,800$1,000 to $2,500
Teeth whitening (in-office)$500 to $1,000$80 to $200$100 to $250
Veneers (per tooth)$900 to $2,500$200 to $500$250 to $600

An expat founder who was putting off a crown, an implant, and a cleaning in the US due to cost can get all three done in the Philippines for under $700 total β€” less than the cleaning alone would cost in most US cities without dental insurance.

Dental Care in the Philippines

Filipino dentists are trained to US standards. Many have completed postgraduate training at US or European institutions. English is the language of dental education in the Philippines and every private clinic operates in English. The quality of materials used at reputable clinics β€” composites, ceramic, implant hardware β€” is equivalent to US standards.

What to look for in a Philippine dental clinic:

A good clinic in Cebu or Manila has a clean, modern treatment room, digital X-ray equipment (not old film X-rays), a dentist who completed formal dental school (Doctor of Dental Medicine or equivalent), and positive reviews from English-speaking patients on Google Maps or Booking.com dental listings.

In Cebu: The SM Seaside area, IT Park vicinity, and Ayala Center area all have multiple reputable private dental clinics. Consultation fees are typically free or $5 to $10.

In Manila: Makati, BGC, and Alabang have the highest concentration of expat-frequented dental clinics. Several clinics near Makati Medical Center cater specifically to foreign patients.

The experience at a reputable Philippine private dental clinic is comparable to a private US dental practice. You will not wait long. The equipment is modern. The dentist speaks fluent English. Pain management is standard. The procedure quality for routine work is indistinguishable from US care.

Dental Care in Thailand

Thailand’s dental tourism industry is highly developed, particularly in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. The country has been a dental tourism destination for decades and the infrastructure reflects this β€” many clinics are specifically designed for international patients, with English-speaking staff throughout, digital record systems, and international payment processing.

Bangkok: The Sukhumvit area has dozens of highly rated international dental clinics. Thantakit International Dental Center and Dental World are among the most consistently recommended by long-term expats for complex work. For routine care, any clinic near your accommodation with good Google reviews is likely adequate.

Chiang Mai: The Nimman area and the city center have solid dental clinic options. Chiang Mai is smaller than Bangkok so the selection is more limited, but the quality at reputable clinics is good and prices are slightly lower than Bangkok equivalents.

What to Expect on Your First Visit

Walk in for a consultation and cleaning first before committing to any major work. Most clinics offer a free or low-cost initial consultation. Bring any X-rays you have from recent US treatment if available β€” this saves the cost of a new full set if they are recent.

For complex work like implants or veneers, ask for a treatment plan in writing before proceeding. Reputable clinics provide this as standard. The treatment plan should specify the materials being used, the number of appointments required, and the total cost.

For implants specifically, ask about the implant brand. Reputable clinics use internationally recognized implant systems β€” Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Osstem, or equivalent. Avoid clinics that cannot or will not specify the implant brand.
